Merdeka Park was officially opened on April 20, 1958. Tunku Abdul Rahman officiated the opening ceremony by having a party with 400 of the poorest children in Kuala Lumpur and by planting a tree and unveiling a plaque.
The tree with the plaque has since been cut down and the park demolished by the local government (DBKL).
NO EFFORT WAS MADE TO PRESERVE THE TREE THAT TUNKU PLANTED!
